When Love Becomes a Checkout Aisle:
The Commercialization of Intimate Connections

What is pornography?

The most comprehensive definition of pornography is technical (descriptive) and refers to "anything that depicts sexual acts" or "communication material that is primarily intended to stimulate sexual impulses or satisfy them for most users in the absence of intimacy with the characters." (Cultural Capitalism and Pornhub: The Commodification of Human Relationships and Anti-Feminist Perspectives)

Pornhub is one of the most popular porn sites in the world and can be seen as an example of cultural capitalism. Cultural capitalism refers to commercial activities in popular culture industries. Pornhub functions as part of the commercialization of human relationships in the popular culture industry and promotes a distorted sexual perception and anti-feminist, male-centric views.

**Objectification of human sexuality**

In the porn industry, including Pornhub, sexual content is treated as a commodity. This commodification objectifies human relationships, making people view each other as commodities rather than as subjects. This leads to sexual objectification issues.

The issue of sexual objectification is particularly serious in the porn industry. There are many reasons for this problem, including limited sex education, prejudiced sexual images in the media, and sexual objectification in the popular culture industry. These issues affect everyone regardless of gender, age, race, or sexual orientation, and those who experience sexual objectification may feel that their rights have been violated.

Pornhub and other porn industries can provide immediate pleasure by quickly satisfying sexual desires, but cannot provide happiness from relationships and can lead to harmful effects through addiction to pleasure.

**Distorted sexual perception**

In porn industries like Pornhub, there is a generalized view of women as sexual objects. This leads to distorted sexual perception. Women frequently appear as sexual objects in movies, advertisements, porn, etc., which causes the problem of women being treated simply as sexual objects.

This problem causes women not to recognize themselves as subjects who own their bodies, limiting women's freedom and rights. Also, the problem of treating women as sexual objects is one of the biggest problems they face, along with violence and hatred.

**Anti-feminist, male-centric views**

Pornhub and other porn industries have a male-centric view, leading to anti-feminist views, which force women to treat their bodies as commodities. This view violates women's rights.

This problem is one of the biggest problems women face, and it affects all women regardless of gender, race, age, or country. Therefore, we must recognize gender discrimination issues and work to protect women's rights.

There is one representative element that shows that pornography is male-centric. It is the "male orgasm" scene in heterosexual pornography. It describes sex as being satisfying only when the man reaches an orgasm. In contrast, during sex, women are portrayed merely as tools for men to reach an orgasm. Even in pornography created for people's sexual fantasies, women have not escaped their status as objects.

As most pornography targets men, women do not even have the right to choose what they wish to watch. Themes, fantasies, and camera angles in pornography for men are created without considering women's preferences and opinions. Just as men have sexual desires, women do too. Pornographic content has not been created for women because they do not watch it; it has been created for men, so women do not watch it.

Not all women dislike mainstream pornography. However, considering that women have few opportunities to explore their sexual desires and fantasies in a male-centric society, it is understandable why many women do not view pornography positively.
